Brian Gerald Thurston passed away peacefully at Hospice Simcoe in Barrie on Monday, May 18, 2026, at the age of 69, with his loving family by his side.
Beloved husband and best friend of Heather Cook-Thurston for 42 wonderful years. Loving father of Leslie Cook, and proud Papa to Tivon Cook, Terrel Cook (Symren Persaud), and Tehya Cook, who brought him endless joy.
Brian will be dearly missed by his sister Jane Henderson (Jane Snider), and was predeceased by his brother John Thurston (Tracey Bates). He will also be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews Katie Henderson (Connor Main), Michael Henderson, Amanda Thurston-Tramble (Bryan Latham), and Ryder Latham, along with many extended family members and friends.
Brian will be remembered not only for the deep love he had for his family, but for the joy, kindness, and connection he brought to every part of his life. His Lutheran church family meant so much to him, and he found great comfort and purpose in faith, fellowship, music, and community.
Nothing made Brian prouder than being “Papa.” He treasured every moment with his grandchildren, whether cheering from the sidelines at football and hockey games, applauding dance performances, or simply spending time together. His steady presence, encouragement, and warm smile will remain a lasting gift in their lives.
Brian loved his work throughout his career, but retirement opened another meaningful chapter. As a volunteer driver for Caithkin Treatment Foster Homes, he formed genuine and lasting relationships with the children he transported, offering not just rides, but kindness, laughter, and someone they could count on. He had a special way of making people feel seen and cared for.
Driving was one of Brian’s greatest joys. Whether heading out on a solo road trip or travelling with family and friends, he loved the freedom of the open road and the stories that came from every journey. He was a gifted storyteller and writer who captured his adventures, reflections, and experiences with creativity and heart and involvement with Katimavik youth program.
Music was woven deeply into Brian’s life. He loved singing in choirs both in Markham and later at the Parkview Centre in Barrie, where music and friendship brought him great happiness. He also enjoyed live performances and could often be found enjoying favourite artists like the Carpet Frogs, Miss Emily, and Valdy. Brian embraced life with enthusiasm — from his love of the colour orange to the excitement of Formula One racing and attending the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
Above all, Brian will be remembered for his compassionate heart, his sense of adventure, his creativity, and the love he shared so freely with family, friends, and community. His memory will continue to travel with all who knew and loved him.
Family and friends are invited to gather at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 460 Mapleview Drive West, Barrie, on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow at the church.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Princess Margaret Hospital’s Dr. Srikala Sridhar and Toronto General Hospital’s Dr. Veit-Haibach (UHN Team); Dr. Kent Russell and the teams at RVH’s Cancer Care Centre, Emergency Department; Simcoe County Paramedics, Bayshore Home Health Care, Life Labs staff at Little Lake and Quarry Ridge; Dr. Kelly Emerson and the compassionate nurses and staff of Hospice Simcoe and St. Elizabeth Health Care, Barrie, for their care and kindness.
In memory of Brian, donations to Hospice Simcoe, the RVH Cancer Centre, or Princess Margaret Cancer Centre would be greatly appreciated by the family.
