Dr. John Frederick McDowell

Dr. John F. McDowell:

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. John McDowell on 23 September 2026 at Hospice Simcoe in Barrie at the age of 86. He passed peacefully surrounded by family after a brief battle with cancer.

John was born on 22 April 1940 in Alliston, ON to Jeanne (nee Graham) and Dr. Fredrick McDowell. John and his younger brother, Peter (2024) grew up in Barrie.

A Physician and a Dentist, Dr. Fuzz lived a long and full life. His passions included being out on the waters of Georgian Bay, dogs (especially goldens), skiing, scuba diving, building and football.

John was a hands-on person that wanted to understand how things worked, and how to fix them. John always fixed his own cars, boats and built his family home.

He loved all his dogs, especially his goldens. John was lucky to have been loved by many dogs through his life. Sadly Peter, his last golden, pre-deceased him in 2024.

John will be sadly missed by his wife Barbara (nee Murray), children Cheryl, Todd (wife Delores), Dale (husband Greg Freir), Dawn (husband Barclay Hancock), and grandchildren Peter, Jonathan, Will, Claire, Tuula, Ronan, Chloe, Charlie and Ben.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and volunteers at Hospice Simcoe for taking such compassionate care of John in his final days. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice Simcoe in Barrie, ON.
