In Loving Memory of Edgar Wilson West
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edgar West, who left us peacefully on January 20, 2026, at the age of 85. Edgar lived in Barrie, Ontario and was often seen walking beside ‘the Bay’ in the East End. His big grin, friendly greeting and sense of humour touched the lives of everyone he met.
Edgar was born on July 23, 1940, in Northern Arm, Newfoundland, where his family and friends inspired his passion for music, fishing, and family life. Edgar began his lifelong career as a butcher in Antles store in Botwood. Edgar married Juanita in 1957. They had three children—Eugene, Anna-Marie, and Conrad—before relocating to Toronto in 1966, where their fourth child, Christopher, was born the following year. Edgar worked in several butcher shops to support his family. After retiring, he and Juanita moved to Markdale, ON, where sadly Juanita later passed away.
Edgar relocated to Barrie in 2018, where he appreciated both his apartment and the view of the bay. He valued the opportunity to live independently until the end of his life.
Throughout his lifetime, Edgar demonstrated a strong commitment to his family and an admirable work ethic. He and Juanita regularly attended their grandchildren’s birthday celebrations and hosted numerous Christmas gatherings, including the annual skating event at Markdale Arena.
Edgar is survived by children Eugene (Marina), Anna-Marie (Lenny), Conrad (Nancy) and Christopher (Emily), brother Roy (Linda), grandchildren (Adam, Samantha, Stephanie, James, Julia, Nick, Michael and Angelina) and great grandchildren (Cailyn and Atlas) as well as many friends and extended family who will deeply miss him. Edgar was predeceased by his wife Juanita, grandson Jonathan, sister Lottie and parents Marshall and Lizzie.
A celebration of Edgar’s life will be held on Sunday January 25, 2026 at 1pm, at the Legacy Funeral Home in Barrie (parking and entrance on Hwy 400 side of building), where friends and family are invited to gather and share memories. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Simcoe in Edgar’s honour.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Hospice Simcoe for their compassionate care and support during this difficult time and to Dr. Sebastian, Edgar’s family physician, who always took really good care of him.
Edgar’s legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in peace Edgar. You will be forever remembered and deeply missed.
