Eleanor Irene Armstrong was reunited with her beloved husband Jim (2012) on Thursday, May 8, 2025, after courageously battling many health complications with fierce determination over the past seven months. A devoted and proud mother to Linda (Dave) Nedelko and Brenda Hunter, Eleanor’s greatest joy was found in her family. She cherished her role as Nana to D.J. (Bronwyn), Lindsay (Brayden), Andy (Audrey), Haley (Ryan), and Owen (Maddie), as well as her special title of Great Nana to Aubrey and Callie. She will be deeply missed by her dear brother-in-law Howard Elder and sister-in-law Doreen Armstrong. Predeceased by her parents Ruth and Bill Lennox, sister-in-law Ruth Elder, brothers-in-law Bob and Lorne (late Lynne) Armstrong, and cousin and dear friend Sandra Bertram. Born in Barrie on August 2, 1938, Eleanor was the first grandchild of the late Olive and Russell Coulter of Thornton, Ontario. She often reflected on the wonderful times she spent caring for her younger cousins, forming lifelong friendships that she carried through the years. Her warmth and kindness touched many, from her extended family to dear friends and neighbours, including those from years spent at Big Doe Lake in Burk’s Falls.
Family and friends are invited to gather in her honour for a time of visitation at Legacy Funeral Home, 600-55 Cedar Pointe Drive, Barrie, Ontario on Wednesday, May 14th, from 6-8 pm. A Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Thursday, May 15th, at 1:30 pm, with visitation beginning at 12:30 pm. Eleanor will be laid to rest at Barrie Union Cemetery with a reception to follow at the Funeral Home. Memorial donations in Eleanor’s name may be made to Burton Avenue United Church or to a charity of your choice.
