Herbert “Herb” Smale, 82, of Barrie, Ontario, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026. Born on October 19, 1943, Herb lived a full and hardworking life, defined by dedication, kindness, and a generous spirit.
Herb is survived by his devoted wife, Sheila Smale; his two sons, Adam Smale (Julie Ulrich) and Bob Smale (Amy); his cherished grandson, Matthew Smale (Jennifer); and his two great-grandsons, Jackson and Benjamin Smale, who brought him immense pride and happiness. Herb spent his entire career in construction, specializing in fencing. He took great pride in his work, the long days spent outdoors, and the satisfaction of building something sturdy and lasting (including his own family home). Herb’s drive for perfection often had him working late hours. His strong work ethic and willingness to lend a hand earned him the respect of coworkers, clients, and neighbours alike. Many in the community will remember him not only for the fences he built, but for the conversations shared across them.
Outside work, Herb had many passion that filled his life with joy. He loved playing guitar and banjo and was always happiest when he could share music with others. He had a lifelong love of horses and found peace and contentment in being around them. Herb also enjoyed square dancing, and the friendships and laughter that came with it. Above all else, he treasured time with his family and friends. He had a gift of storytelling and could light up a room with his easy smile, quick wit, and warm personality.
Herb’s life was one of simple pleasure, hard work, and deep love. Those who knew him will miss his presence dearly, but will carry his stories, laughter, and life lessons with them always.
