Herman Hess

October 15, 1930 — May 21, 2025

Passed away at Hospice Simcoe at the age of 94. Herman, born in Pforzheim, Germany, spent his youth exploring the Black Forest and its mountains. His mother, a harpist in the orchestra, and his father, a goldsmith, passed down an artistic spirit that shaped his life. Herman poured his creativity into theater, crafting puppets and staging shows, but his true passion was jewelry-making. He worked as an award-winning jeweler in Toronto until age 91, his hands shaping beauty from metal and stone.

In 1952, Herman sailed to Canada with just $20 and a dream of a better life. He soon met Margaret, his beloved wife, and together they raised two children, Peter (Susan) and Susan (Tim). His love for nature shone through in his adoration of mountains and vibrant gardens. A true food enthusiast, Herman savored every single meal at Coleman Care, often requesting seconds to the amusement of the chefs and dieticians. With a mischievous grin, he’d jokingly ask if his medications were poison, earning chuckles from those around him.

Known as “Herman-The-German,” he was a lively character with a playful spirit. He relished table tennis, travel, and hearty laughs, always embracing adventure. In his final years, he expressed deep gratitude for life’s blessings. Herman leaves behind nine grandchildren—Justin, Robert, Nathan, Kristen, Carter, Jenna, Ben, Emma, and Sam—who will carry his vibrant legacy. His larger-than-life personality and unique “Hermanisms” will be deeply missed, but we are forever thankful for the time we shared. See you later allegator.
