It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of James Kevin McMillan, beloved father, grandfather, father-in-law and friend. He is survived by his son Peter Robert McMillan (Elizabeth Faraone), former wife Anne McMillan, granddaughter Samantha McMillan, grandson James McMillan, brother Jeff McMillan (Deena Vaughan), sister Jane Kidd (Wally Boxrud) and sister Joanne Degazon (Desmond Degazon). He is also survived and loved by many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. He is pre-deceased by his father Robert McMillan and mother Margaret McMillan.
Jim was born in Belleville, Ontario in a home that centred around the Anglican faith, family values and the absolute best Thanksgiving feasts. His childhood and adolescence were filled with fun and adventure, memories he recounted in incredible detail and looked back on with great fondness. He attended Moira Secondary School in Belleville before going on to study at Western University. His favourite subject was chemistry, and although he never became a pharmacist, he maintained a sharp and analytical mind. You could always leave it to Jim to tell a story about his past (that included the first name and last name of everyone involved) to help teach you a life lesson or just give you a good laugh. He’d be the first to admit he wasn’t perfect, but age had a way of softening him around the edges, fostering his gentle, reflective nature and earning him the title, “World’s Greatest Grandpa”.
In 1981 Jim moved to Toronto to explore all the exciting things the city had to offer. He met his wife Anne in 1982 and they married on a beautiful sunny day in October of that year. The day before he passed, he looked out the window at the beautiful fall colours and remarked that he got married on a day just like this. He had a soft smile on his face that seemed to take him back not only to that time, but every moment in between.
Jim will be remembered as “the World’s Greatest Grandpa,” whose quick wit and ever-ready sense of humour could light up any room. He was there for his family (including Bruce the dog) and was a dear friend. He will be greatly missed. Love you Grandpa, rest in peace.
