Kenneth “Ralph” McDonell

On Monday, January 12th, 2026, at the Simcoe Hospice in Barrie, Ralph McDonell, 84, passed peacefully in his sleep from this life into glory. Surrounded by love, he knew he was going to a better place where his Heavenly Father would be waiting for him. Ralph was an entrepreneur and self-made business owner who helped pioneer the silver recovery industry in the 1960s and 70s, earning him the nickname “Silman”. He was a devoted husband and father whose passions included boating, fishing, snowmobiling, and family vacations, often to Florida. A devout Christian, he shared the Gospel with anyone he could, led boys and teen groups at various camps and churches, and had a heart for global missions, serving on the Canadian board of OC International in the 1980s with his dear friend, Galo Vasquez. Ralph loved watching wrestling, Swiss Chalet, and singing… and today, we know he is singing with the greatest choir of them all… Beloved husband of Donna (now deceased) for 53.5 years. Loved father to Melodi Schiafone (Michael), Kenneth McDonell (Lori-Anne), Christopher McDonell, and Michael McDonell (Cheri). Cherished grandfather of Taylor (Janae), Sarah, Aaron, Spencer, and Sophia. He is predeceased by his parents, Duncan and Edith McDonell, and his brother, Doug (Pat), and will be remembered by their family: Alan (Jackie), Linda (Gareth, deceased), and Thomas. A funeral service will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church at 374 Salem Road, Barrie, on Monday, January 19, 2026 at 2 O’clock p.m. with a reception to follow. Donations can be made to Hospice Simcoe and Emmanuel Church. Spring interment will take place at Barrie Union Cemetery.
