Sandra Grant, January 30,1942 – April 30, 2026
Our family is sad to announce the passing of Sandra Gail Grant, age 84, of Barrie, Ontario who passed away peacefully at her home on April 30, 2026. She has been a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, and her presence will be deeply missed.
Sandy was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 30, 1942, to Albert and Florence Martin. She was the youngest of six siblings, all now having passed on. She is survived by her husband, Ian, to whom she was married for over 61 years, her sons Kevin and Michael, and three grandchildren, Jordyn (from Kevin), and Timothy and Matthew (from Michael). She enjoyed friendship with Michael’s wife Jenn, her daughters Maddy and Cameron, and Jenn’s wonderful extended family. She also remained a close friend with Joyce, mother of Timothy and Matthew.
Sandy was blessed with a beautiful natural soprano voice which she used for many years with considerable acclaim. She sang in churches, youth rallies, and on radio and television broadcasts. She won many prizes at Kiwanis Musical Festivals in Toronto. In 1969 with the assistance of others she produced an LP record, “Sandra Sings, How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings” (from Psalm 84).
Sandy attended Toronto Bible College in the early 1960s, where she met Ian. Over the years they have cherished continued friendships with many of their classmates from those years.
In her late ‘thirties Sandy graduated from George Brown College in Toronto in a program qualifying her to work with emotionally disturbed children and youth, with a placement at Blue Hills Academy. When the family moved from Richmond Hill to Barrie in 1981, she worked with developmentally challenged children and their families, and for a year for Hincks Treatment Centre at Edgar with street youth from Toronto. This was followed by ten years with the Simcoe County Catholic School Board as a Family Support worker, focusing on children who had difficulty adjusting to school. In retirement she volunteered with Hospice Simcoe, the Barrie Women’s and Children’s Crisis Centre, and more recently at Victoria Village Manor.
For almost twenty years Sandy and Ian were members of the board of the Barrie Concert Association that has brought classical music to Barrie since 1946. They have been loyal patrons since they arrived in Barrie.
For several years Sandy attended Collier Street United Church where she sang in the choir under the direction of organist Jim Leonard and was their soprano soloist. She sang in the King Edward Choir, followed by the Lyrica Chamber Choir. She also attended Bethel Community Church for many years. A favourite responsibility was directing the children’s choir, and she was choir director for six years.
