Willem (William) Renier Baetsen (“Bill,” “Wim,” or “Will,”)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of William Renier Baetsen at the age of 93 at Royal Victoria Hospital. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the residents and staff of Whispering Pines, as well as to the paramedics, nurses, and physicians who cared for him with such compassion in his final hours.

Beloved husband of Carol (Gerdes), William was a devoted father to Charles (Patricia), René (Kathy), Matthew (Yvonne), and Sandra. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and a great-grandfather to one cherished great-granddaughter. He is survived by his sisters Annie Van Oirschot, Elsie Foote, and Nellie Broun’s.

Born in Blerick, the Netherlands, William was one of 15 children. William grew up during the years of occupation before eventually immigrating to Canada, where he met and married the love of his life, Carol. He worked as both a farmer and in various roles beyond the farm, always keeping himself busy. William had a natural talent for building and fixing, often found taking something apart just to put it back together. Even at the age of 89, he could be seen on the roof of his home, undeterred by the doubts of others. His independence, resourcefulness, and work ethic are qualities he proudly passed on to his children.

William was also known for his unwavering willingness to help others and for his love of being outdoors, especially in the fields. In his later years, he dedicated himself to caring for his wife as she lived with Alzheimer’s, remaining by her side for as long as he was able.

He will be deeply missed by his family and by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Donations in William’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society.
