Matt Drury

Matt Drury

Owner, Funeral Director

From a young age, Matt knew he wanted to be a Funeral Director. His interest in helping families during life’s most difficult moments led him into the funeral profession in his early twenties. In 1996, Lathangue and Skwarchuk Funeral Homes in Bradford gave Matt his first opportunity to observe and assist with various aspects of funeral service.

The following year, in 1997, Matt began working part-time with Steckley-Gooderham Inc. in Barrie, where he continued to support families with care and compassion. In 1998, he was accepted into Humber College’s Funeral Education Program. After completing his studies, Matt returned to Steckley-Gooderham Inc., where he served his apprenticeship and obtained his Funeral Director’s licence in 2020.

In 2006, Matt rejoined Skwarchuk Funeral Homes before moving to Adams Funeral Home, Barrie in 2008. He was proud to serve families there for many years until 2020, when he and his wife, Cindy, realized their dream of opening Legacy Funeral and Cremation Services Inc. in Barrie.

Matt has lived in Barrie since 1999 and having grown up in New Tecumseth, Matt truly understands the importance of small-town service. Even as Barrie has grown, it remains a close-knit community — something Matt and Cindy value deeply. They opened Legacy Funeral Home with the goal of serving families in Barrie and the surrounding area with honesty, integrity, professionalism, and fair prices — just as they would want for their own loved ones.

Matt is active in his local church and has spent many years volunteering with the Barrie Minor Baseball Association, both as a coach and as a member of the Board of Directors. The Drury family are big baseball fans who love spending time at the park cheering on the Barrie Baycats and connecting with friends and fellow fans.

Community involvement and supporting local businesses are important to Matt. He is a proud member of the Barrie Chamber of Commerce is still supports BNI, and he’s always looking for ways to encourage and support locally owned small businesses and charitable organizations.

Both Matt and Cindy come from families with deep roots in Simcoe County. They live in Barrie with their children, Hannah and Josh, who are also part of the family business and help out with various duties at Legacy Funeral Home.

Bernice Huitema

Bernice Huitema

Pianist

Born and raised in Smithers, a small northern town in British Columbia, is where Bernice resided until moving to Barrie in 1989 to study Visual Art and Graphic Design at Georgian College. While in Barrie she stayed with a family from her church, it was there that she met and married her husband Mike. They have raised four sons together and enjoy living life in Essa County, especially after receiving the recent gift of a grandson!

Bernice had studied music as a young person and had taken part in accompanying choirs throughout her university years. She has always enjoyed playing music for any occasion and has been a church pianist for almost 40 years, both out west and here in Ontario.

Bernice plays piano for Covenant Church, Barrie on a regular basis. She has accompanied many voice students and other instrumentalists for local music festivals. She continues to play for the weddings and funerals that take place at her church and finds it a joy to take part in their celebrations while giving comfort during times of grieving.

We are truly blessed to have Bernice share her talents here at Legacy Funeral Home as she brings comfort to the families that we serve.
