For Matt, being a Funeral Director has always been about people.

From the age of seven, Matt knew he wanted a career in funeral service where he could make a difference in the lives of others. He entered the funeral profession in his early twenties and has spent more than 25 years helping families through some of life’s most difficult moments.

After beginning his career in 1996, Matt completed Humber College’s Funeral Education Program and earned his Funeral Director’s licence in 2000. He went on to serve families at Steckley-Gooderham, Skwarchuk Funeral Homes and Adams Funeral Home before opening Legacy Funeral and Cremation Services with his wife, Cindy, in 2020.

For Matt and Cindy, Legacy represents more than a funeral home—it represents a commitment to serving their community the way they believe families should be served: with compassion, honesty, dignity, professionalism, and fair pricing.

Being part of a seventh generation Simcoe County family, growning up in New Tecumseth and living in Barrie since 1999, Matt has a deep connection to Simcoe County. He understands the importance of community and believes that families deserve personal, attentive care from people they know and trust.

Outside of Legacy, Matt is actively involved in the community. He has volunteered for many years with the Barrie Minor Baseball Association as a coach and Board member, remains active in his local church, and enjoys cheering on the Barrie Baycats with his family. He is also a proud member of the Barrie Chamber of Commerce and supports local businesses, charitable organizations, and community initiatives.

Matt and Cindy are proud to call Barrie home. Together with their children, Hannah and Josh, who are also involved in the family business, they are honoured to serve the families and community of Barrie and the surrounding area.

For Matt, every family deserves to be treated with the same care, compassion, and respect he would want for his own.

Hannah is the daughter of Matt and Cindy. She is creative and enjoys music and writing. She is a caring person who has a deep appreciation for the bereavement sector. 

Being born and raised in Barrie, Hannah is looking to serve her community in her role as a Funeral Director's Assistant.

After a 35 year career with the OPP Scott retired just to take on a couple of part time jobs. During his "free" time he enjoys skiing and golf.

Scott is married to Pam, has four daughters and six grandchildren whom he loves to spend time with.

Laura knew she would be a hairdresser when she was only 5 years old. She has 25 years experience working in various salons both in the U.S. and Canada.

Currently Laura is working out of Salon 54, in her home. She loves working at home and the flexibility it gives her.  It allows her to create a clean and ammonia-free atmosphere.

Hairdressing has provided Laura with many fun opportunities. Leading her to be head of play performances for churches and schools, in hair and makeup, getting hosts ready for tv/ video recordings, and bridal parties ready for their perfect day.

Laura feels privileged to help care for the families that choose Legacy Funeral Home. She is honored and can’t wait for God’s hand in this direction. 

Born and raised in Smithers, a small northern town in British Columbia, is where Bernice resided until moving to Barrie in 1989 to study Visual Art and Graphic Design at Georgian College. While in Barrie she stayed with a family from her church, it was there that she met and married her husband Mike. They have raised four sons together and enjoy living life in Essa County, especially after receiving the recent gift of a grandson!

Bernice had studied music as a young person and had taken part in accompanying choirs throughout her university years. She has always enjoyed playing music for any occasion and has been a church pianist for almost 40 years, both out west and here in Ontario.

Bernice plays piano for Covenant Church, Barrie on a regular basis. She has accompanied many voice students and other instrumentalists for local music festivals. She continues to play for the weddings and funerals that take place at her church and finds it a joy to take part in their celebrations while giving comfort during times of grieving.

We are truly blessed to have Bernice share her talents here at Legacy Funeral Home as she brings comfort to the families that we serve.
